The theme of distortion evolved out of my exploration of identity and perception. This project was inspired by Kertész’s series Distortions (1933) as it led me to invent a tool, reminiscent of Kertész’s warped mirrors, that could visually impact the world around me. I replaced the camera lens with an amorphous, bulbed, hand-blown piece of glass, through which I shot portraits of friends and family. The physical appearance of the lens announces the effect it will have on the subject and the kind of image it will create.

The "Daliscope" through which the portraits were shot

The "Daliscope" through which new distortions can be contemplated

The crutch was designed after Dali's crutches present in many of his surrealist paintings, such as Sleep (1937).  It is made of plywood, glue and glass.
