This amorphous diptych of pastels was inspired by Katalin Ladik and Ana Mendieta’s feminist art, in which they pressed glass sheets against their faces to create a form of distortion, thereby challenging western ideals of feminine beauty.  In this project, two models pressed and moved their faces against a scanner as the scanning bar was recording the image, generating amorphous portraits. The use of pastels was inspired by Henry Tonks’s portraits of severely injured World War I soldiers.
Many thanks to Johanne M. and Camilla B. for so kindly lending your faces.
